Gold to Rally Above $1,900 by End 2012: HSBC

Gold could be one of the few assets to profit from the political and economic turbulence in the United States as the “fiscal cliff” approaches, potentially creating a rally in the precious metal later in 2012 for it to reach $1,900 per ounce by the end of the year, analysts at HSBC said.

“Economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions and the uncertainty of the U.S. November elections are theoretically gold-bullish,” and gold should perform better later in the year “when U.S. growth is poor and the dollar is weak,” a new HSBC report said. “We expect prices to rally to above $1,900/oz by the end of the year. Patience is the most important commodity.”

HSBC recommends holding onto gold as an asset that will gain in value as investors fear the future of the euro [EUR=X  1.2386  ---  UNCH    ] and dollar[.DXY  82.32    -1.04  (-1.25%)   ], with governments and central banks expected to intervene to shore up their currencies’ strength.

According to commodities’ analysts at the bank, the outlook on gold [GCJ1 Unavailable      ()   ] is positive for the second half of the year despite the current stall in the gold rally due to a rise in supply, lack of demand in the jewelry sector and uncertainty about the European financial crisis and U.S. “fiscal cliff” approaching at the end of 2012, when the U.S. government must decide whether or not to increase taxes and introduce spending cuts, which could risk a slowdown similar to Europe's.

Traditionally, gold has been a safe haven for investors looking to park their money in a stable asset, but so far in 2012, gold prices [GCC1  Unavailable      ()  ] have slumped nearly $400/oz. From the record highs of September 2011 when an ounce fetched $1,920, prices have now fallen to around $1,600/oz over the last three months, prompting investors and analysts to question why the gold price isn't racing higher as investors look for safe assets in a volatile economic environment.

HSBC’s analysts report that gold has previously bucked the trend of falling commodity prices because it is seen to be immune from governmental fiscal and monetary policies and as such it should, theoretically, attract investors as a “neutral” asset outside the risk on- risk off spectrum. Indeed, the report states, gold should retain its value as central banks seek to prop up their economic systems with quantitative easing that can undermine currency markets.

“The big four central banks have printed around $9 trillion during the current crisis, roughly equivalent to the total value of gold ever mined…[but] despite this long-standing pedigree as a safe haven, gold has noticeably failed to rally in the present economic turmoil.”
Rather than a rally, the euro zone crisis and uncertainty in the stability of currencies have led to a “contradictory dynamic” in investors’ reaction to gold, leading to the stall – but not a collapse - in the asset’s price.

“Periods of heightened euro zone concerns have typically led to equity market sell-offs, triggering margin-call-related selling in gold as investors seek to raise cash,” the report said.

“Also, U.S. dollar strength as the euro weakened in the face of persistent euro zone crises further weighed on gold [and] any safe-haven bid from the euro crisis has been offset by the associated rally in the U.S. dollar.”

“However, we retain our bullish view on gold for the second half of 2012, buoyed by official sector demand and our expectations of U.S. dollar weakness as the market becomes more fixated on the currency’s value as the U.S. fiscal cliff story gains greater traction," they said.

7 Common Money Mistakes to Avoid

“I have been working for 20 years, yet I have very little cash in my savings. Sometimes I wonder where all of my money has gone” - Mrs Chong, Executive

Does the above statement sound familiar? If you ask around, you are sure to find at least one person you know who shares the same sentiments as Mrs. Chong.
If you are thinking of improving your financial health, first, you need to be aware of how you spend your money and be able to recognise your financial mistakes. This will allow you to manage your finances properly. At the end of this article, you will be able to identify the common money mistakes and what you can do to avoid them.

Mistake #1:
Failing to Plan
7commonmoneymistakes1
Failing to plan is planning to fail. While most of us are fully aware that we need to set proper financial goals, not many of us actually plan our finances properly. It could be because we are too busy with work, family matters or other activities that we see as a higher priority. The idea of spending some time to analyse our finances may not be of utmost importance. To some, it could be a stressful event as the conclusion of planning your finances may require you to be more conservative and disciplined in your spending.
Failing to plan may result in us having to pay higher taxes, leaving our savings sitting silently in underperforming investments for years or overpaying for financial products. Since there are always deadlines to be met at work, we tend to let our finances be, thinking that it is of lower priority as there are no deadlines to meet nor is there anyone to force us to look into our financial plans. This may go on until we realise that we have encountered a serious deficit. By that time, it may be too late for us as we would require more in order to recover from our financial crisis.
It is important to note here that PLANNING is an act typically found among people who are successful in accumulating wealth, even with just a modest income.

Mistake #2:
Spending Beyond Your Means
7commonmoneymistakes2
Previously, most people shop with cash. A quick look into one’s wallet or purse would allow them to roughly gauge the balance available to spend for that day, week or month. Nowadays, most people have credit cards with credit limit more than one’s income. With just a swipe of the card, you can spend way beyond the balance available in your bank account. Apart from that, we constantly overspend due to peer pressure and consumer temptation that surround us on a daily basis. Since purchasing is made so easy, we tend to fall into the trap of impulse spending, grabbing whatever we desire without thinking through whether it is a need or a want. We are, to a certain extent, exposed to mild brainwashing with TV commercials, newspaper ads, sale circulars, and flashy shopping malls promoting the lifestyles adopted by the rich and famous, which of course involve having the latest gadgets and gizmos.
The ability to flaunt our gadgets and personal wealth not only extinguishes humility within ourselves but also makes us fall into the mistake of spending exorbitantly and unnecessarily. If we do not jump on the bandwagon, we will be considered left out of today’s scene. If we find that at the end of each month, after servicing our car loans, housing loans, credit card bills and other utility bills, the net salary that goes into our bank account is usually insufficient or in a deficit, we must realise that we have been spending beyond our means.

Mistake #3:
Spending Future Money
7commonmoneymistakes3
“Buy now and pay later!” This trend has become a norm nowadays and is even more apparent when we are anticipating a windfall such as the year end bonus or increment. The practice of paying for something with future money is very dangerous as we would not be able to manage our finances properly. Spending future money may result in us paying even more than the original price of the product and incurring unnecessary high interest fees or financial costs.
There are many risks that we have to bear by spending future money. For example, we may not have enough funds for emergencies such as medical bills or car mechanical problems. These emergency expenditures may affect our ability to pay for our previous commitment which we have made leveraging our future money. As such, it is important for us to have an emergency fund to aid us in times of need. This fund must be at least three times our monthly expenditure so that it leaves us with more than enough cash to spare.
Credit cards are also a common problem. Credit cards have become a must-have item in our wallet. No doubt it is a convenient item to have around; however, some of us misuse it and treat it like a passport to spending our future money at will. It has become a common phenomenon where, by just settling the minimum payment at the end of the month, you will be able to spend more now. As a result, the credit card bad debt snow-balls to an extent beyond our control.
According to a study by the Department of Statistics Malaysia on bankruptcy caused by credit card debt, the number of people declared bankrupt has increased in the last few years especially in the younger age group. There are cases where using credit card is a wise way to spend your money, for instance when buying flight tickets or making online purchases, but when you depend on your credit card to make even the most minor purchase of necessities, then you need to check your financial health.

Mistake #4:
Delaying Saving for Retirement
 7commonmoneymistakes4
After working for about 30 to 50 years, retirement would certainly be welcome. Some of us even aim to take up early retirement. In order to achieve this, we need to plan our finances to make sure that we have enough savings to sustain our ideal post-retirement lifestyle. Unfortunately, if we have been delaying saving for retirement in our younger years, the profit generated from our retirement savings may be insufficient to allow us to sustain the retirement lifestyle that we want.
The idea to delay allocating some portion of our current salary as our retirement savings until we are more financially stable is very risky. As our income grows, our expenditure will grow as well. At the same time, we need to ensure that our savings grow proportionately with our income from a very early stage.
One of the best ways to ascertain that we save monthly is by practicing the “pay yourself first” concept. Instead of spending the moment you receive an income, put a portion of the money aside into a savings or investment account. This would ensure that we are able to live comfortably when we finally embrace our retirement.

Mistake # 5:
Investing in the Wrong Products
7commonmoneymistakes5
There are various kinds of investment products in the market. Some generate low profit and are of low risk and some would allow us to have hefty profits but with high risk. However, in order for us to identify the right product that suits our investment appetite, we must take some time to understand the market that we are going into, the risk and returns, and the procedure of trading and investing. One simple way is to log on to the Malaysian Investor website (www.min.com.my) and read the many articles about financial literacy that the SIDC has prepared.
There is also the challenge of spotting illegal investment products. Scammers are constantly looking for gullible investors and if we do not do proper research on where we are about to put our money, we might end up losing our investment. Aside from the Malaysian Investor website, there are various sources that provide information about investing. For example, you can go to the Bursa Malaysia website (www.bursamalaysia.com) to learn more about investing or visit the Securities Commission Malaysia website (www.sc.com.my) to check on the legality of an investment scheme.

Mistake #6:
Failing to Pay Off Debt
7commonmoneymistakes6
The next best step to take after paying yourself first is to pay off your credit card debt. Although the option to pay a minimum of the debt is available, you should always try your very best to pay the full amount owed. This way you will be able to avoid the late interest charges on the owed balance. Imagine if you paid off a credit card debt that charges 18% interest per annum, you indirectly stand to gain 18% in savings annually. Not many investment products can offer a return rate that high! By paying off your credit card debts, you then can devote other portions of your cash to investments.

Mistake #7:
Focusing Too Much on Money Matters
7commonmoneymistakes7
All the above tells us to focus on our finances. However, on the other extreme, we must also not be too absorbed in accumulating our wealth to the extent that we lose sight of other priorities in our lives. While we plan our financial health, we must not neglect our spiritual satisfaction, health, family and friends, career satisfaction and fulfilling interests. Without other contentment and pleasure, even the richest man on Earth would not be happy.
At the end of the day, we must remind ourselves to find the balance between accumulating wealth and enjoying that wealth according to our means. We must be committed in our efforts to improve our financial health. Unless we are truly committed to creating wealth, chances are wealth will remain estranged to us.

Emas vs Perak (Bahagian 1)

  • 'Safe heaven'
  • Sebagai harta pusaka?
  • Sebagai penyimpan nilai dari dimamah inflasi?
  • Simpanan jangka panjang?
  • Muamalat/Jual beli? Dinar dirham?
  • Keluar dari sistem matawang kapitalis? Riba?
  • lain2.

Jadi apa kata anda, emas atau perak? Anda tentukan sendiri.

States seek currencies made of silver and gold

"Worried that the Federal Reserve and the U.S. dollar are on the brink of collapse, more than a dozen states have proposed using their own alternative currencies of silver and gold."

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- A growing number of states are seeking shiny new currencies made of silver and gold.
Worried that the Federal Reserve and the U.S. dollar are on the brink of collapse, lawmakers from 13 states, including Minnesota, Tennessee, Iowa, South Carolina and Georgia, are seeking approval from their state governments to either issue their own alternative currency or explore it as an option. Just three years ago, only three states had similar proposals in place.
"In the event of hyperinflation, depression, or other economic calamity related to the breakdown of the Federal Reserve System ... the State's governmental finances and private economy will be thrown into chaos," said North Carolina Republican Representative Glen Bradley in a currency bill he introduced last year.
Unlike individual communities, which are allowed to create their own currency -- as long as it is easily distinguishable from U.S. dollars -- the Constitution bans states from printing their own paper money or issuing their own currency. But it allows the states to make "gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts."
To the state legislators who are proposing state-issued currencies, that means gold and silver are fair game, said Edwin Vieira, an alternative currency proponent and attorney specializing in Constitutional law. And since gold has grown exponentially more valuable, while the U.S. dollar continues to lose ground, the notion has become increasingly appealing to state lawmakers, he said.
The state gold rush: Utah became the first state to introduce its own alternative currency when Governor Gary Herbert signed a bill into law last March that recognized gold and silver coins issued by the U.S. Mint as an acceptable form of payment. Under the law, the coins -- which include American Gold and Silver Eagles -- are treated the same as U.S. dollars for tax purposes, eliminating capital gains taxes.
Since the face value of some U.S.-minted gold and silver coins -- like the one-ounce, $50 American Gold Eagle coin -- is so much less than the metal value (one ounce of gold is now worth more than $1,700), the new law allows the coins to be exchanged at their market value, based on weight and fineness.

Local currencies: In the U.S., we don't trust

"A Utah citizen, for example, could contract with another to sell his car for 10 one-ounce gold coins (approximately $17,000), or an independent contractor could arrange to be compensated in gold coins," said Rich Danker, a project director at the American Principles Project, a conservative public policy group in Washington, D.C.
South Carolina Republican Representative Mike Pitts proposed a currency system that would allow people to use any kind of silver or gold coin -- whether it's a Philippine Peso or a South African Krugerrand -- based on weight and fineness. Pitts said in the bill, which currently has 12 co-sponsors, that the state is facing "an economic crisis of severe magnitude."
Republican representatives from Washington State followed suit in January, introducing a bill that would also allow any gold and silver coins to be considered legal tender based on metal values. Minnesota, Iowa, Georgia, Idaho and Indiana are also considering similar proposals.
Many of the bills would make it possible for residents to exchange the physical coins for goods and services, so you could use coins to buy anything from groceries to a car as long as the store chooses to accept them.
However, most people aren't going to walk around with such valuable coins in their pockets, said Vieira. Plus, calculating the value of the coins -- especially if they come from different parts of the globe and are of different sizes and shapes -- will get tricky.
It's more likely that the states will create electronic depositories and accounts for the coins to make transactions easier, when and if the initial bills are passed, he said.
Utah Gold & Silver Depository is already developing a system where customers could use debit cards linked to their gold holdings. When customers swipe their debit cards to make transactions, physical gold and silver coins would be transferred between accounts in privately-owned depositories (or vaults) based on the market value of the metals.
Before deciding on a specific form of currency, some states -- including Minnesota, Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina -- are considering proposals that would first require a committee to review their alternative currency plan.
The future of U.S. currency: The states' proposals have been gaining steam among Tea Partyers and Republicans, many of whom also endorse a nationwide return to the gold standard, which would require the U.S. dollar to be backed by gold reserves.
Tea Party "father" Ron Paul is sponsoring the "Free Competition in Currency Act," which would allow states to introduce their own currencies, and rival Newt Gingrich is calling for a commission to look at how the country can get back to the gold standard.
But it will be the individual states that could really get the ball rolling, said Vieira. Even if several of the current proposals get killed, the introduction of so many bills at the state level is drawing national attention to the issue, he said.

Funny money: 11 local currencies

Of all the state proposals circulating right now, Republican-controlled states including South Carolina, Georgia, Idaho and Indiana have the best chance of passing their proposed bills this year, said American Principles Project's Danker. If just one or two states implement an alternative currency, it could have a Domino effect, he said.
"I think we could get a couple passed in this legislative session, and that would show this is mainstream, popular and it would be a justification for more of the risk-averse states for doing this," he said.
There are, of course, many people who think the recent push for alternative state currencies should be stopped in its tracks. David Parsley, a professor of economics and finance at Vanderbilt University, said he thinks state-issued currencies are a "terrible" idea.
"Having 50 Feds" could debase the U.S. dollar and even potentially lead the country into default, he said. "The single currency in the United States is working just fine," said Parsley. "I have no idea why anyone would want to destroy something so successful -- unless they actually wanted to destroy the country." To top of page
